The Housing Pressures in Christchurch report released by the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment says total housing stock in Christchurch had been reduced by a net 11,500 houses, or 6.2 per cent, since the first Christchurch earthquake in late 2010 cheap bedroom furniture.
In addition, rental property levels have stagnated, with the number of new rental bonds down 19 per cent since December 2012, and some people reporting bidding wars to get into a rental property company registration samoa.
With a net population loss of 9200, the pressures were driving up house prices and rents, and it was estimated the number of people without secure housing was between 5500 and 7400, up from about 3750 before the earthquakes.
Housing Minister Nick Smith described the situation as "challenging, but not a crisis".
"This report reinforces the need for the government to continue to be active in the provision of temporary, social and permanent housing solutions," Dr Smith said.
"It helps ensure a well-informed, ongoing response to Christchurch's housing challenges."
Dr Smith said extra accommodation financial help had been given to 2100 households, and the government also established the Canterbury Earthquake Temporary Accommodation Service (CETAS) which had helped more than 2500 households and set up three temporary accommodation villages.
He also announced 40 new houses to be managed by CETAS would be constructed at the Rangers Park subdivision in Christchurch's eastern suburbs to provide additional temporary housing Shipping Forwarder .
He said the report showed Christchurch needed more temporary housing while family homes were being repaired, faster progress on new community social housing, to speed up the repair of state housing and more worker accommodation Claire Hsu.
The report estimated between 15,000 and 25,000 construction workers would arrive in the area, mostly in the next two years, to help with the city rebuild.
